  • Hi I'm Ginni, nice to 'meet' you! ☺️👋🏻

I'm a neurodivergent Occupational Therapist (OT) who has been working with all kinds of minds since my inception of employment in support roles over the last 20 years.

    Background:
I’ve worked in many settings, from preschool classrooms to mental health and substance use street outreach (with folks aged 3 to 95!), helping people do things they want or need to do, but that are challenging for various reasons.

At the beginning of my career, I worked mostly with school-aged kids and families. I went on to earn an applied degree in Child Studies where I learned not only about human development, but also how the dominant systems around us either help or hinder a person’s life participation and day to day experiences.

My lived experience and how OT helped me:
Fast forward about 10 years later, I enrolled in OT school (on a bit of a whim!), hoping for more experiences where I could keep learning about social and environmental systems and specialized methods of scaffolding and support.

3 days before I started my master's degree I endured a head-injury (concussion) that amplified 'already challenging-for-me' things to the point I couldn't function successfully as a student.

All my old systems and 'tricks' stopped working and no matter how hard I tried, it seemed like I couldn’t keep up with the demands of school and daily life (late assignments, unfinished exams, complete emotional exhaustion, and meltdowns). I almost dropped out.

But, by semester 3 of OT school, and at age 34, I finally acknowledged my persistent career/work/daily life challenges pre-and post head injury, and got help to access formal support at my university.

I also began trying out some of the OT strategies I was learning about to apply to my own life and sought connection with peers that understood my experiences.
    It. Changed. Everything!

Now… at nearly age 40, I continue to uncover and lean into my strengths, and advocate for environmental modifications and support as needed. I keep experimenting with strategies that help me stick to things I want to accomplish, and am really passionate about helping others do the same (at any age/life stage)!

Me as an OT (and a human):
My approach as an OT is very much like a 'co-explorer'. This planet wouldn't exist without diversity, and there is certainly no 'one-size fits all' when it comes to living successfully. Some mottos that may drive our  work together are:

    • there is always more than 1 way to do something'

    • 'stay curious'

    • 'embrace the weird and wonderful'.

As I realize personal fit can be important when selecting someone to work with, here are some of my personal 'stats':
Strengths: honesty, staying up late/sleeping in, comfort in appearing 'cringe', tab-hoarding
Weaknesses: time blindness, task-switching, washing the dishes, reading under pressure
    Dislikes: bullies and onions
Favourite recovery strategies: obligation-free days, spending time with my furry sidekick 🐕🌲, researching things online
    Career choices in alt. universe: botanist 🌱, entomologist/ lepidopterist 🦋, comic book writer/ maker ✏️🎨, stand-up comedian(?)🎤🤷🏻‍♀️

Feel free to take a look at my 'Areas of Practice' section to get a better idea of specific things we could work on together, and reach out if you have any questions or want to book a consult to get more info/ see if it's a fit.

Thanks and see ya later! 💫
